How Kids Help

Plant a Row for the Hungry
About 20 sixth- and seventh-graders at a Middle School in Ohio decided to grow fruits and vegetables through Plant a Row for the Hungry, a program coordinated by their regional food bank and a local newspaper. Some students offered their families' gardens for farming, while others volunteered to plant, maintain and harvest the crops.

Empty Bowls Symbolize Hunger
Over 200 Minnesota students in a high school art class made and sold bowls at an "Empty Bowls" event. The fundraiser increased students' awareness of hunger in their community and raised approximately $2,500 for local and global hunger-fighting organizations.

Girl Scouts get Creative
Girl Scouts in Florida hosted local food drives at houses of worship and schools. In order to spark contribution, one troop distributed decorated paper grocery bags and asked people to fill and return them. Another troop set up a booth inside a neighborhood grocery store so that people would see them, buy something extra and drop it off for collection.
