READY FOR SCHOOL?

Thursday, September 6, 2007 — It seems like the summer flew by. As sorry as we are to see it go, by this time of the year it's fun to start thinking about the new school year ahead. Editor-in-chief
It's exciting to think about the classes you'll take, the things you'll learn and the new friends you'll make. I asked some of the students at the Millsberry Academy to share their thoughts and to tell us what they're looking forward to in the new school year.
Jeremiah has been listening to music all summer long and started taking guitar lessons once a week. Boy, was he surprised to learn how much math and music have in common. Now he can't wait to sharpen his addition and subtraction skills. When he's not learning about numbers in Mrs. Seashore's class, he'll be practicing his math skills by playing Countdown.
Agnes had a great time this summer visiting the farms around Millsberry, picking fruits and vegetables fresh from the fields and tasting them even before she got home. But all those delicious, fresh foods made her wonder how our mouths can tell them all apart. She's looking forward to science class with Mr. Fort this year. She hopes to learn how our taste buds can tell sweet from sour or bitter from salty. Agnes knows those fruits and vegetables are good for her, but sometimes she's not sure exactly why. She's hoping Mr. Fort will explain what vitamins and minerals she can find in some of her favorite foods and how they help her body to do its best all day long.
Carmen spent a lot of time reading this summer. She loves the way books can open her eyes to a world she's never seen. Through books, she's traveled to places far from Millsberry: other countries, other times and even other planets. But lately she's been thinking about the people who write those books and just how wonderful it would be to create her own stories. She wants to try putting her thoughts down on paper and paint the kinds of pictures you can only create with words. Carmen's looking forward to expanding her vocabulary (and improving her spelling, too). Lucky for her, she can practice in her spare time by playing Solver.
