1. Always carry a flashlight, and be sure to stay in areas that are well-lit. 2. Walk on the sidewalk at all times. Do not run. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic. 3. Obey all traffic signals and signs. Only cross the street at crosswalks. 4. Stay in neighborhoods that you're familiar with—you don't want to get lost in the dark. 5. Only trick-or-treat at houses that are well-lit. Do not approach a dark house, and do not cut across yards. 6. Don't approach unfamiliar pets or other animals. 7. Before eating any of your treats, have your parents check to make sure that they are safe. Also, don't eat unwrapped treats. 8. Be sure that all the parts of your costume, including masks and wigs, are flame resistant or retardant. 9. If you have a toy sword or knife as part of your costume, it should be flexible and soft, so it cannot hurt anyone. 10. Eat a well-balanced dinner before you go trick-or-treating, so you won't be tempted to eat too many treats. 11. If you are old enough to go trick-or-treating with just your friends, make sure to take coins with you in case you have to make an emergency phone call. 12. Never enter a stranger's home or car for a treat (or any other reason). |
